Lost Dog in a Canyon, Trail, or Open Space

Southern California has terrain that is hard to search on foot: canyons, washes, foothills, fields, trail systems, and open land behind neighborhoods. This is where a thermal drone can be useful if the timing and sighting information are good.

Terrain where a drone can help

  • Canyon edges and slopes with visible open patches.
  • Trails, fire roads, and foothill areas.
  • Flood channels, washes, fields, and large lots.
  • Open land behind neighborhoods or near parks.
  • Areas where walking every section would take too long or be unsafe.

Why recent sightings matter

A drone is not useful if the search area is endless. A recent sighting, track, bark, camera clip, or reliable direction of travel helps narrow the flight plan so the drone checks the most likely areas first.

Even if the dog is not found during the flight, ruling out terrain can help you stop wasting effort in the wrong place.

What to send before calling

  • Last known location, trailhead, cross streets, or GPS pin.
  • Time of last sighting and direction of travel.
  • Dog size, color, coat length, and clear photo.
  • Temperament: skittish, friendly, newly adopted, athletic, or injured.
  • Any hazards: traffic, cliffs, water, locked gates, livestock, or wildlife.
